After a master’s degree in Nanoelectronics for integrated circuits, I discovered Data Science and Machine Learning during my master’s thesis. Since then I worked as a Data Scientist for a big hospitality group and now for a start-up specialized in Marketing for mobile apps. Outside of my work, I am passionate about data in sports especially in football.

What motivates you in your daily work as a data expert?

I like the challenge of discovering new behavior using data. I also like to help data experts solve their daily problems using data because I learn a lot about their activities. Data doesn’t have boundaries and is used in any field. This pluridisciplinary aspect motivates me every day !

What does datacraft bring you?

Working in a startup environment is really enthusiastic because you need to do everything. But there are many challenges that are difficult to solve by myself. datacraft is bringing me an environment where I can discuss and learn from my peers thanks to the office and the great network of members, and also thanks to the workshop and the activities that run datacraft.

I am currently a postdoctoral student working on Safe AI and I am mostly focused on NLP although I am starting to work on Computer Vision as well.

What motivates you in your daily work as a data expert?

It can be naïve to hear but most of the day I am amazed by what we achieve with a computer and a bit of theory. I am a young researcher, I often learn and discover new mathematical objects that open new opportunities and I find it magical. For example right now I am focusing on Ranking and Kemeny consensus.

What does datacraft bring you?

datacraft allows me to meet data practitioners from various backgrounds (i.e machine learning/data engineer and business analysts). On a personal note, the discussions allow me to check that my research scenarii are not too far from the real scenario. Indeed, in research we too often make strong assumptions that make our work not usable in practical cases. Because datacraft is also about sharing, I am also trying to be active and give as much feedback as I can when the problems fall into my area of expertise (mostly NLP).

Marc is a graduate engineer and often performs in a role of liaison between tech and business. He started in the enterprise analytics sphere, first practicing operationally as a data engineer (mainly telecom and web), and then leading projects and teams on structured data issues (data warehousing / corporate performance management / (un+)supervised machine learning). As freelance now, Marc contributes to create value towards a smarter data culture using machine learning and data management skills: in parallel in the public sector and elaborating a decision intelligence framework, nicknamed PPLIC.

What motivates you in your daily work as a data expert?

Before the rise of “data science” and becoming a data expert, I started with a hack to speed up practical work in physics. I’m interested in the mechanics of transforming information (computer traces) into relevant and useful prescriptions, knowing that the field of possibilities is rapidly expanding: Vertigo. What motivates me is the demystification of AI for teams and companies that are on their way to a better data culture. Among this, I focus on the know-how and on methods/knowledge/tips/skills and tools teams need to collaborate efficiently.

What does datacraft bring you?

datacraft has a singular positioning and the residency brings me valuable things that are rarely found elsewhere:

1/ Being able to meet and exchange with a variety of personalities (with different backgrounds and experiences) on data science issues outside the constrained framework of usual professional relations: that is to say, outside the supplier-client relationship, outside the marketing/commercial discourse of some (vendors), not limited to technical/technological skills of individuals.

2/ To make a specialized contribution on my favorite subjects, which brings me feedback.

Gérard Biau is a full professor at the Probability, Statistics, and Modeling Laboratory (LPSM) of Sorbonne University, Paris. His research is mainly focused in developing new methodologies and rigorous mathematical theory in statistical learning and artificial intelligence, whilst trying to find connections between statistics and algorithms. He was a member of the Institut Universitaire de France from 2012 to 2017 and served from 2015 to 2018 as the president of the French Statistical Society. In 2018, he was awarded the Michel Monpetit – Inria prize by the French Academy of Sciences. He is currently director of Sorbonne Center for Artificial Intelligence (SCAI).

What motivates you in your daily work as a data expert?

What I like the most in my research is to understand what are the mathematical forces driving the performances of algorithms. According to me it is very important for the innovation process to know the limits and capabilities of database methods in order to design better ones.

What does datacraft bring you?

We are very proud at SCAI to have datacraft as a partner. It is a win-win collaboration. datacraft connects SCAI and the students with the ecosystem of datascience. SCAI brings its academic network expertise.

I am an Associate Professor at Sorbonne University at the laboratory of computer sciences LIP6. My research activities deal with Artificial Intelligence, both in Computer Science and in Philosophy, contributing to the improvement of scientific knowledge. I am also carrying out works in philosophy of science on this topic through a new PhD thesis started two years ago. I am also passionate about the history of art.

What motivates you in your daily work as a data expert?

What makes me wake up enthusiastically every morning is firstly to follow the work of my doctoral students, having in common the use of machine learning to improve scientific knowledge. It is indeed very motivating to work in a new scientific paradigm in which it is necessary, I am convinced, to simultaneously carry out progress in computer science, in mathematics/statistics and in philosophy. Last but not least, it requires to perform collaborations between startups and larger companies, to build together the right questions to be solved.

What does datacraft bring you?

datacraft is the place to promote exchanges between academic researchers, startups and larger companies. Currently, this gives me the opportunity to set up a workshop on the explainability of machine learning guided in real time by the needs of the participants. I really like this pragmatic and progressive approach to share knowledge. I am firmly convinced that this way of knowledge sharing is more than necessary to build useful Artificial Intelligence tools to help solving the big current human challenges while ensuring everyone’s autonomy and power of action.

I am Emmanuel, and I work as a Data Architect at Shom. I come from the academic world where I studied linear and Bayesian statistics applied to human sciences. I then did a master’s degree in Data Science, where I developed a passion for Linux and data architecture, which quickly became my core business.

What motivates you in your daily work as a data expert?

So many things, but mainly, I would say my curiosity! In this job you always have to stay alert, learn new things and anticipate what comes next. But you also have to take a look at what’s been done before. How did we get here? What needs led to the creation of this tech?

What does datacraft bring you?

I’ve just arrived, so I’m still discovering all the resources Datacraft has to offer. At the moment I am getting to know the people who are part of it, and I am always surprised to see the quality of the work that its members undertake.

Frederic had a Ph.D. in data science and, after being a data scientist, he is now a product manager in a startup focused on cryptography. When not at work, he likes waking in the woods, meditating and making origami cranes (but usually not all at once…). Frederic is a member of datacraft’s advisory board.

What motivates you in your daily work as a data expert?

Currently, what motivates me is to create new ways to protect people’s data. With my team, we are building tools that use cryptography to protect privacy and security of sensitive data (fully homomorphic encryption, secure multi-party computation, differential privacy, confidential computing, etc.).

What does datacraft bring you?

datacraft brings me a sense of community. It gives me the opportunity to stay in touch with data science best practices since it’s no longer my main occupation.

Jean-Marie is researcher in AI Ethics at Institut Mines-Télécom. He is also the coordinator of the academic chair Good In tech (Institut Mines-Télécom / Sciences Po). His research addresses the use and perception of AI Fairness, privacy preserving ML and XAI tools. He is getting published in top international journals and conferences such as Journal of Business Ethics, Technological Forecasting and Social Change or the International Conference on Information Systems. He is currently teaching at Sciences Po on Algorithms & Public Policies and at Aivancity on Mathematics for Machine Learning. In the past, he worked as a Data Scientist and AI engineer after graduating in Mathematics (ENSAE), Economics (Sciences Po / Polytechnique and PSE) and Philosophy (Sorbonne and ICP).

What motivates you in your daily work as a data expert?

AI Ethics is a new research field and one of the fastest growing fields in Machine Learning. It emerges from the numerous ethical concerns, vulnerabilities, and incidents raised by current AI development. I love how transdisciplinary the field is evolving. On the same day, one can work on a new Python library on XAI, while writing a philosophical paper on the socio-materiality of the pragmatist conception of ethics.

What does datacraft bring you?

I like to root my research on daily practices of data scientists, AI engineers, etc. By joining datacraft, I have the opportunity to get in touch with a very innovative data scientist community. Datacraft is a wonderful initiative to share our knowledge on AI practices, concerns on ethics, guidelines etc. This is a place where researchers and practitioners can work together, discuss their works and contribute to building better AI.
